Schmidt Electronic Laboratories Pty Ltd was founded in 1980 by its Chief Executive Officer, Gary Schmidt.
The company is located in the Melbourne suburb of St. Kilda and specialises in the following areas:
Manufactured products and systems:
- high quality microcomputer taximeters,
- miniature high speed receipt printers,
- hand held magnetic stripe card and smart card capable point of sale terminals,
- transaction processing systems, and
- taxi fleet management systems.

- transaction processing of magnetic stripe card transactions under both the Taxinet and TerminalWORKS brand names.
The company has developed significant capability in the area of smart card technology and was a foundation member of the Australian Chapter of the Asia Pacific Smart Card Forum. Gary Schmidt has served as a member of the Forum’s Board of Directors and as chairman of the Forum’s Technology Working Group.
Taximeters have traditionally been the company’s flagship products. The company is the largest supplier of taximeters in Australia and more than half of the nation’s 16,000 taxis are fitted with Schmidt taximeters. In a number of states Schmidt taximeters are installed in more than 75% of the taxis.
The company is also a significant exporter and is a leading supplier to a number of countries including New Zealand and the Fiji Islands. Major sales have also been made to Singapore, Malaysia, USA and Canada. In many years more than half of the company’s taximeter production is exported. The current product range includes the Model G4 taximeter and its related accessories.
Back in 1982, the company achieved international recognition with its development of the world’s first multiple fare share ride taximeter and achieved the distinction of being the only taximeter manufacturer in the world to have its products lauded in the international news magazine “Newsweek” (13 September 1982). The company has been granted local and international patents for taximeter design.
